11-Jul-2010Wests Lions have suffered a disappointing 16-15 loss to a resurgent Easts team at Griffith Oval on Saturday.
In a physical match Wests were out enthused by an Easts outfit now eyeing a semi final spot after collecting the wooden spoon in 2009.
Wests opened the scoring with a Gus Mckerchar penalty which was cancelled out by an Easts try in the corner just 5 minutes later.
Wests played some enterprising rugby over the next 20 minutes of play but failed to capitalise a glut of possession into points with many final passes going astray.
After leading 5 – 3 going into the break, Easts extended their lead early in the 2nd half with a penalty goal of their own.
Easts then lost one man to the sin bin while another was sent off for stopping a certain try with a high tackle on winger Drew Southwell.
Wests used the man advantage to take the lead for the first time in the match with a well taken try to captain Jarret Budworth after some solid forward play.
The lead changed again with an Easts penalty goal to take the scores to 11-8 before Wests looked to have had the game won when Jesse Mogg scored yet another sublime try from a chip and chase.
Easts were not done however scored in the corner before rounding out the clock to take the game 16-15.
Colts came from behind to win 22-17 and seconds returning to form with a 33-5 victory.
3rds had a massive 59-0 win over Easts whilst 4ths lost 29-5.
