19-Jul-2010Wests Lions have consolidated their spot in the John I Dent Cup top four with a convincing 42-12 victory over Royals at Jamison Oval.
In a match billed as do or die for both clubs Royals got off to a great start with a well worked try to centre Tim Cornforth.
The Phillip based club proceeded to dominate the next 20 minutes of possession and territory without any reward with an inability to crack a resolute Lions defence.
Wests began to gain ascendency in the latter stages of the half with tries to veteran Matt Sutherland and Jesse Mogg.
Right on half time Jesse Mogg kicked a penalty goal to give Wests a 15-7 lead heading into the break.
The second half saw the Lion’s backs break loose with Jesse Mogg and Angus Mckerchar featuring.
Jesse Mogg once again showed his scintillating skills scoring three more tries including another candidate for try of the year from a brilliant Angus Mckerchar flick pass.
Royals then threatened to fight back with a try of their own before Wests sealed a comprehensive Lions win with a try in the corner to centre Jon Anderson.
Earlier in the day Wests went down in 4th grade to University 27-7 but managed to win 3rds 29-12 at Aranda.
In the remaining games at Jamison oval colts won 31-15 and 2nds were also victors downing Royals 22-15.
