Wests are extremely pleased to introduce new Director of Rugby, Doug Ryan in preparations for season 2021.  Ryan, will join the club having extensive experience in the Shute Shield competition and is looking to bring some attacking flair and a fresh set of eyes. Wests have been a main stay in the premier division of Rugby in the capital since 1962, and after some extremely promising performances this recent season, Ryan is looking to take the club to new heights.

With an array of experience, Ryan, spent this year helping out the newly reformed Penrith Emus as the First grade Attack coach. “It was a great learning experience, getting to work with someone as accomplished as John Muggleton (Former Wallabies Defensive Coach), now the chance to work alongside another great defensive minded coach in Adam Butt, is exciting to me” says Ryan. Having also being the Head Coach of the NSW under 18 Gen blue side that played at Waratahs Headquarters last weekend. Ryan cut his teeth coaching and in Director roles at clubs in Sydney like Randwick and Southern Districts. Before joining Penrith, Ryan completed a stint in Canada which culminated in working with the national sides as an assistant coach with the under 18 and 20s.

As part of the new appointment Ryan will be tasked with overseeing the newly formed Cubs Academy. An initiative that looks to provide both talented young women, and young male Rugby players with the necessary physical, mental skills as well as vital life skills to be successful on and off the field. Head Coach Adam Butt added “As a coaching team and a club we find it imperative that aspiring Rugby players receive a holistic development, ensuring they become good people as well as good Rugby players. We trust this becomes a crucial step into progressing into Brumbies representative programs”.

Applications to be a part of it are still open and can be found through the clubs website and social media platforms.

Wests Rugby has prided ourselves on accepting and catering to rugby players of all abilities. Aspirational players and social players are all welcome.  The club is determined to continue their focus to grow our Women’s program.
