Former Wests Junior and 2 time premiership winner Marco Cecere announced as head coach for 2022/23

15 October 2021

Wests rugby Club is very pleased to announce the signing of former Wests Junior and 2 time John I Dent premiership winner Marco Cecere as our new Head Coach for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

We were very pleased with the response to our advertisement and the quality of the applicants wanting to be part of our Club. In the end, Marco was the best fit for taking our Club into the next season of the John I Dent competition. Marco presented a thorough knowledge of the game, gathered through experience playing on two continents at a high level, and working as an assistant coach at Wests over the last two years. His knowledge of the playing group, the respect he has for the players, and his love of the Club helped to set him as a clear choice for this position.

Marco says "I'm extremely excited and honoured to be given the opportunity to become head coach at Wests.  The club means a lot to me and it's given me my fondest memories in rugby.  Along with the rest of our coaching and support team, I'm determined to see Wests succeed both on and off the field.

Next year will be a  massive year for the club, as we celebrate our 60th anniversary.  I'm sure the players across all our teams will have extra motivation to do well and I'm looking forward to being a part of it."

Marco already has a clear vision for how he wants the Club to work in order to achieve success on the field. But with that, he has a strong belief and commitment to the off field success of the Club. He wants Wests to be a successful club that attracts players, welcomes players and develops a family atmosphere that keeps everyone together.

Wests are looking to hit the ground running to build on the successful season in 2021, and under Marco we believe we have the person who can guide our players towards that success. Marco has a strong belief in nurturing our younger players coming through the Junior Club, and incorporating them into the Senior Club wherever possible.

With the appointment of our Development Officer, Wests are wanting to strengthen our bonds with our junior Club to develop clear player pathways for all, regardless of their abilities. In Marco, we believe we have the person who can do this.
